When to Use Shogun CalMag

  • It is especially important to use Shogun CalMag when growing with Soft Water or Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water.  Add to your reservoir or watering can at the rate of 0.5 – 1ml/L in all systems – Coco, Hydro or Terra.  This will prevent deficiencies.
  • Calcium is not a very ‘mobile’ element in high humidity environments.  If you are growing in a high humidity environment in Coco then consider applying as a foliar application at the rate of 15ml/L at a pH between 5-7, once a week until deficiencies are corrected.  
  • Tap water is either Hard or Soft depending on your water source.  It is easy to identify which you have.  Hard water leaves white limescale on taps or equipment and is high in minerals (EC >0.4), often with a higher pH. Soft water leaves little to no residue, is low in minerals (EC less than 0.4).
  • Some growers use Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water because it has been filtered to remove chemicals, pathogens, and contaminants.  This is pure water with no mineral content (EC = 0.0).

Visible Signs of Calcium - Magnesium Deficiency
  • Calcium deficiency → New growth comes in twisted or weak, with brown necrotic spots at the tips and margins. Stems may feel soft or collapse under weight.
  • Magnesium deficiency → Lower leaves fade yellow between the veins, often with rust-brown speckling, before dropping early. Upper growth usually stays green longer.

Are you using water straight from the tap, or R/O water?

"Hard" and "soft" are terms used to describe the quality of many water sources. Hard water has a high mineral content, which can cause hard, white lime scale to form on surfaces and growing equipment. Hard water may also have a high alkalinity and a high pH, meaning that considerably more acid is required to lower the pH in the hydroponic system to ideal levels. Soft water, by comparison, is a low mineral water source. Often rainwater is ‘soft’, while municipal water sources across the country range from very hard to soft, depending on where the individual city water supply is taken from. Other water types Some growers prefer to start with water which has been pre-treated to remove any chemicals, pathogens and other contaminates. RO (reverse osmosis), distilled water, filtered and bottled water are all options for small growing systems and those concerned with water quality. To understand your water type, simply immerse your EC/CF meter in your background water, read the display and select the applicable 'water type' or enter your own 'Custom' value.
